Sunday Soul-The Moments

The original Moments are from Washington DC and comprised of Mark Greene, Ritchie Horsey, and John Morgan. After 1968 Al Goodman and William Brown replaced Horsey and Morgan, first signed to Hog Records then signed to Stang Records (Sylvia Robinson's label and subsidiary of All Platinum Records) After Sylvia and the group had a falling out, the group had to change their name to Ray, Goodman, and Brown.
Would Sylvia Robinson be considered the female version of Lou Pearlman? (Referring to her association with Sugar Hill Gang) From what I have read, she is known for being somewhat sketchy, and in the case concerning The Moments, apparently falsifying some documents and not paying the original members for what they were owed. Nevertheless, The Moments produced some hits, and this is one of their most commercially successful hits, and one of my favorites. Released as a single.

DJ Spinnerty-Making Babies 3

I met him through Devon Who when he came up to do an interview on Grown Kids Radio. Dan Spinnerty is a very talented DJ and his selection is always surprising in the best way...this is his third installment of one of my favorite mixes EVER...no seriously. I listen to Making Babies 1-3 so much  that I have to give em a break, room to breathe, put em on the "shelf" so I don't get sick of them.

SWEATER SHOCK

Sweater Funk meets Future Shock (Party thrown by Freddy Anzures and Dj Proof)
Freddy is the creative genius behind all of our fliers, we are grateful to have him. He is talented in so many ways, and this weekend he will be playing records, representing the Future Shock of the night. Check out the Sweater Shock radio show he put together, featuring a song from each member of the crew.My choice was "Dancing in Outerspace" by Atmosfear

This Sunday I am pulling out all of my electro-space-boogie-disco-funk that I can get away with (Maybe even some Italo?) It is also the birthday party for Sweater Funk brother Marky aka Dj Proof and I am on cupcake duty....This Sunday starting at 9pm in Chinatown, SF.

B.A.S.S. 2 Year Anniversary

What an honor to play along these Dj's...I used to follow these Dj's before I became one and now we are on the same bill. WOW!
Here is video from last year

Let's Get Crackin'

The more I learn about 80's RnB/Funk/Boogie, the more I realize how incestuous it is. Maybe that's why you can almost guarantee that a song written/produced by a well-known player of the era, from a particular year on a certain label will be something worth buying on vinyl. That's how I approached record digging when I first got started, which was taught to me by Uncle Renmin.

This song is from the band Shock...I couldn't find much information about the band except for the fact that it was produced by Marlon McClain, who is the guitarist of Dazz Band and former member of Pleasure. The self-titled album was released on Fantasy Records in 1981. The first time I heard this was at a lowrider show in Pomona, these 2 chicano MC's were pushing their mixtapes and bumpin' this song at their booth. Enjoy

EL CHICANO

I just found out today that Bobby Espinosa, the founder of El Chicano recently passed away. I usually listen to my East Side Story Compilations or Lowrdier oldies on Sundays , and the fact that it is above 60 degrees and sunny up here in San Francisco makes it even more appropriate for my musical selection for today. RIP Bobby! Thank you for the great "brown-eyed soul..."

"He was recently inducted into “Hammond Heroes” an elite society of the best players on the Hammond organ! An Honor bestowed on the gifted musician, the only 'Chicano Artist' ever to be recognized for his unique style of Blues, Jazz and Latin music on the Hammond B3 organ." From Chicano Radio Network Blog

Download my favorite track here..."Sabor A Mi" from the Album Revolucion (1971) Ersi Arvizu, the lead vocalist on the track has such a smokey voice-a romantic Eastside anthem!
