Happy Birthday Kirk
The Selecter DJ Kirk...where do I begin. I consider him the un-official mayor of San Francisco. Born and bred in this city, he has done it all. His parties in the 90's were ones that most DJs I admire today had to sneak into because they were underage. Well respected in the community, he can play anything (Yes, he has even done a country set). This Sunday we are celebrating his birthday at Sweater Funk by playing all 45's (he is turning 45 again this year).
Steppin' in the name of Kirk...
Girl I'm Gonna Miss You
I want to share one of my favorite tracks by The Moments (R.I.P. Al Goodman). We all know Love on a Two Way Street, but I recently re-discovered this track.

Los Amigos Invisibles
When I lived in Mexico, I was inundated with sh*tty techno and cumbia pop (See Kumbia Kings) but I was also exposed to some music that when I listen to today, years after moving back to California, it brings back so many beautiful memories. Here is one that reminds me of Chacahua, Oaxaca

KMEL Ultimate DJ Contest
I was listening to KMEL at 4 in the morning a few weeks ago, and they mentioned this contest. Being a competitive Aries, I wanted to take it on. I also wanted to show that I play more than just that lovely Sweater Funk sound. I hit the studio with my good friend Joe Vargo (1/2 of Nyte Court) and we used his Logic program to make the mix. It is a combination of vinyl, mixing live, and mp3's.
I made the first cut, so if you enjoy my mix and would like to vote for it, please click here http://tinyurl.com/28m6ebb. The winner gets to open up for the artists at KMEL's Summer Jam September 4th!

Wishlist Record
"Heartbreaker" by Starlena Young of Slave and Aurra...one of my favortie Female Vocalists of the early 80's. The original 12" goes for about $75
Funkmosphere August 16th
Our brothers from another mother. Without this night in Culver City, Sweater Funk might not exist. Jon Blunk brought the same vibe from this night to SF and the rest is Sweater Funk history...
Much love to Dam-Funk, Laroj, Randy Watson and Billy Goods. Its been a year since I played at Funkmosphere. Probably the most nerve-racking set I ever did, but after the first 5 records it was smooth and I really got comfortable. I will be playing August 16th and I can't wait to feel those nerves again...
Will pack this for the LA trip

The Nonce-Bus Stops
I'm long overdue for a B.B.Q. in some nice weather...SF Summers mean I'm busting out the scarfs and boots. Pulled this record out for nostalgia's sake, I played this at Chung Techs' Watermelon eating contest in Oakland last summer...I wanna play it outside soon
Cholo Funk
I have a sub-genre of Boogie which I call Cholo Funk. It is a sound hard to define...The best way I can try to describe it is the type of songs you would hear pumpin' out of an impala in Pomona. Here is one of my Cholo Funk favorites.
