THE KING OF HARLEM BOOGIE: LEROY BURGESS

This Saturday we celebrate 5 years as a crew...A group of 13 people with varying backgrounds, 9-5s or 10-2's, kids/no kids, married, eternal bachelor(ettes), black, white, pilipino, or latino (add some Frenchies and Macanese for good measure) and you have Sweaterfunk. One thing we can all say is that we are pretty obsessed with soul music and the people who create it.

We are bringing theee Leroy Burgess out for a live performance since his music has been our go-to records since the inception of our party

Check out his Red Bull interview from 2004 here

Take a listen to our Ode To Leroy Mix...Blended by our own DJ Guillermo

Capt Kirk put it best:
"Sometimes it's very simple..every Sunday for the past 5 years, we've been on a mission:

"To share the deepest boogie, two step and modern soul original records and do it for the love."

...Some think we're nuts for searching, seeking and paying for rare vinyl that most wouldn't dream of but we do it and we love it.
...We did it when there was a handful of people at the Li-Po basement and we'd do it regardless of how many folks come out on any given Sunday.
...Sure we have some stellar djs in the crew but it's less about the individual dj and more about the individual songs that are too good to be hidden away in some collector vault.
...No cover on Sundays is our thing whether there's a superstar guest, a performer or just the SF crew.
To date we've done over 250 no cover Sundays.

Several times a year at the Elbo Room and abroad we charge a cover but only to cover the costs of bringing out artists that we love or covering travel for our group.
(ONRA/Steve Arrington/Dam-Funk/Opolopo& Amalia/Mr. Peabody's, etc.)
This is the case with Our FIVE Year Anniversary with Leroy Burgess LIVE on Saturday June 29th, 2013.

For some the $18 ticket may seem a little steep but in the overall scheme of things it's really a small price to pay to see a legend performing for the first time in San Francisco.
Think of it as a time to give back if you appreciate what we've done over the past 5 years and what Mr. Burgess has done over for the past 40 years.

We thank you for your continued support, we hope to see every Sunday as much as possible and we hope you can join us on our FIVE Year Anniversary.

One Love, Sweater Funk Crew"
